Sarah is heading to North Carolina
Welcome back to 'The Life of H: Sarah, Reimagined,' where I explore the story of the biblical matriarch through poetry and a poet’s prose.
Hello friends,
It is not hyperbole to say that along with dreams, poetry and my ever-evolving lifelong relationship with Judaism form the DNA of my identity. They enliven me spiritually and spark meaning, joy, and personal growth in my life.
A time of devastating loss some 30 years ago launched my (mostly) self-guided study of Judaism. I was trying to understand how the most devastating chapter in the story of Sarah, Hagar, and Abraham, had somehow brought me healing and comfort.
The poems I’ve written in response have become the heart of this online publication.
Writing and researching my poems has blown the roof off of my previous understanding of Judaism, which I now realize has deep earth-based roots and intrinsic connections with the Divine Feminine.
Writing and sharing what I’ve written here is one way that I celebrate my love for poetry and the treasures of the Jewish tradition with you and over 2,000 subscribers nearly every week.
Now, I am happy to say that Sarah (or at least my Sarah poems) is stepping out more boldly into the world:
🎉 I recently learned that I am one of 36 poets who have been accepted to the 2nd Annual Yetzirah Jewish Poetry Conference, which takes place in Asheville, North Carolina in July! 💫
Participating in the Conference will provide invaluable time and space for me to dive into my love of literature, explore craft, and delight in one of the most important elements in a writer’s life: being part of a community of supportive peers.
Especially in a time of so much complexity and controversy, I am grateful for spaces like the ones that Yetzirah creates to celebrate the beauty of Jewish wisdom traditions, poetry and writing together.

This week’s poem:
As a lifelong journal-keeper, I welcome prompts that will invigorate my writing.
The central image for this week’s poem came from a prompt I often give my students:
Take notes on and describe the sky every day for a week.
After all, very little of the world that I look out on every day resembles Sarah’s. Except, of course, when I lift my eyes from the paved roads and peer up past the rooftops, treetops, chimneys, and steeples of my New England town.
