My (Substack) worlds are colliding
Today I combine the themes of my 2 online publications: Dreams and Sarah's story. That's because tonight we're dreaming together for global healing. (And, there's even a new translation to check out.)
Usually you find poems and posts about the biblical story of Sarah, Hagar, and Abraham here. Meanwhile, over on my other Substack publication, This Dream is a Poem, I post about dreams and writing. Today I’m going to try to (artfully) blend the two.
Or, you might say, my worlds are colliding:
That’s because four times a year, I also host a group dream for Global Healing through my Facebook group 350 Dreamers. And tonight’s the night! (Friday, March 28.)
So, I’m bringing my world’s together: I’m sharing this information on both publications because I wanted everyone to know about this opportunity, especially because I know that so many of us are feeling like our worlds are breaking apart right now.
So, how am I bringing together my world of dreamwork and the biblical story of Sarah?
Not surprisingly dreams show up twice in Sarah’s story:
1. Abraham receives messages from God at night, including a dystopian look at the future challenges he and Sarah’s descendants will face.
2. When Sarah is taken into King Abimelech’s household, the king has a dream that changes the trajectory of Sarah’s story—and ours. (More on that in a later post.)
3. Today I’m offering a dream practice based on a nondenominational spiritual-but-not-religious prayer you can use to help you set your intention to dream for global healing. Which seems appropriate because The Life of H centers on a story influential to three major world religions: Islam, Christianity, and Judaism. So prayer is part of the territory.
Want to skip to my latest poetic translation of Sarah’s story? Go ahead, the next verses are ready for you right here.
And now, for those who are ready to try dreaming together, here’s what you need to know:
You can find instructions on how to participate in tonight’s group dream for global healing at 350 Dreamers on Facebook. It’s easy, all you need to do is set your intention, then share any dreams or reflections with the group.
Setting Intentions to Dream for Global Healing
Inviting a dream on a particular topic, called dream incubation, is easy. You might simply write down your intention before bed with an affirmative statement like, “Tonight I dedicate my dreams to global healing,” or “Show me how I can be a healing presence on planet Earth in these challenging times,” or use any phrase that feels right for you.
You can also strengthen your intention in various ways, which you can learn more about with the resources toward the bottom of this post. Here’s one that uses a preparatory prayer to direct your heart and mind toward global healing:
Try using this contemplative activity to help solidify your dream intention for global healing.
Focus on an image of the earth or a natural scene that inspires a sense of appreciation and connection in you.
Find a quiet place to sit and contemplate that image for about 5 minutes. As you do, connect with your feelings of appreciation, admiration, and respect for the generosity, beauty, power, and unfathomable intelligence of the natural world.
End your contemplation by repeating aloud or silently this simple prayer, which I’ve adapted from Janet Conner’s “Perfect Prayer,” (from her book Soul Vows). Or use any poem, affirmation, or prayer that speaks to you:
The Divine in me, through me, and as me
Blesses The Earth
Honors The Earth
And showers Her with grace.I suggest repeating the prayer a few times during the day, and then again just before bed on the night that you’ll be incubating your dream for Global Healing.
Hold your image in your mind and repeat your chosen poem, affirmation, or prayer as you fall asleep.
In the morning, give yourself a few minutes before opening your eyes to remember your dreams. Then write down any dreams you remember — or any thoughts or feelings you woke up with, even if you don’t recall any dreams.
If you don’t remember any dreams, keep trying. It might take a few days or even longer. Either way, join the conversation with 350 Dreamers to share your process and any dreams that you remember.
